Fallen Pt 10

Officer Jason Dunn  sipped his tea from a Pete's tea tumbler. "Officer Dunn reporting in. Nothing out of the ordinary happening here. Out." He turned the patrol car around and started another circuit around the block. This was the drudge work. watching a family whose son had been kidnapped. If only he could capture someone trying to get at them! Maybe he could be in on the interrogation and boy would he make the hood sing! They would find out where this kid was being kept and he would lead the charge in the raid that wold liberate the young man and the other hostages and he would be in the paper and the news and-  He stopped daydreaming and stopped the car sharply. What was that movement? Was that a hood? A cat ran out from under a bush three feet from where he was was looking. It startled him at first. Then he smiled at himself and chuckled. being scared of a cat that was just running from something? What an idiot! Why, it was perfectly normal for cats to... Run away from something? Instantly he flicked on his searchlight and aimed it at the bush. The outline of a man was projected against a fence behind the bush. Officer Dunn Jumped out of his car and standing behind the door he aimed a flashlight at the shadowy figure and called out, "Come out with your hands away from your body." Into his radio he said, "This is officer Dunn reporting a suspicious person or persons in the area."
All of a sudden the figure bolted out of the bush. Officer Dunn, without even thinking about it, took off after the person who was dressed in black. The man ran around a corner and jumped a fence with ease. Officer Dunn hesitated for a moment and then decided that prudence was greater than valor. Besides what if the fugitive turned back and took refuge in the Greene home?
"Officer Dunn reporting. Suspicious persons encountered near Greene home. Suspect fled when confronted. Dressed in black jumpsuit with a matching baklava. Officer did not give chase. Out."
Thirty minutes later a call came in on Dunn's radio.
"All patrol cars report immediately to the The following address ------- . Kidnapping reported. Case deemed 'Urgent'."
Dunn never finished his tea. He bolted out of his patrol car and dashed as fast as he could to the front door of the Greene house. Mr Greene opened it instantly.
"Its Farren!" He said. "He's been taken!"
Dunn had failed. Somehow, sometime, someone had taken another of the Greene children. On his watch. That made him mad! And scared. Whoever was doing this, they were really, really good. And evil.
